A small farm with a big passion for chickens.

We're a family-run homestead nestled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, home to over 200 birds across almost 30 breeds. Our focus is on quality over quantity — we take our breeding program seriously, with a particular emphasis on Ermine Ameraucanas and Black Copper Marans.

From our carefully managed breeding pens to our free-range laying flock, every bird on this farm is raised with attention and purpose. We're proud to share that with our neighbors, our community, and chicken enthusiasts across the region.

Our Story

A homestead built on
curiosity and chickens.

Our Story

It started simply enough — a few backyard hens, a little curiosity, and a growing obsession with egg color. Before we knew it, we were chasing the rainbow, adding breed after breed in search of the perfect basket: olive, chocolate, sky blue, creamy white. What began as a hobby has grown into something we're genuinely proud of: Magnolia Hill Farm, a family homestead tucked into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where chickens, gardens, and good living all go hand in hand.

We're Shane and Kaiti, and we run this farm together with our three kids — Grayson, Asher, and Savannah — who are right there in the thick of it, feeding, handling, and caring for the birds alongside us every day. There's something special about raising children who know where their food comes from and who aren't afraid to get their boots muddy.

What We're About

What started as a colorful egg hunt turned into a deep appreciation for the breeds behind those eggs — the genetics, the history, the craft of intentional breeding. Over the past few years that passion has grown into a thoughtful breeding program built around two breeds we believe in deeply: Ermine Ameraucanas and Black Copper Marans.

We're not trying to be the biggest operation around. We're trying to be one of the best. That means careful selection, attentive husbandry, and sharing birds and eggs with people who care as much as we do.

Life on the Farm

Beyond the chickens, Magnolia Hill Farm is a working homestead. We grow a garden, tend the land, and try to live as intentionally as we can. The farm is always evolving — new breeds to explore, new seasons to learn from, new neighbors and fellow enthusiasts to connect with.

If you've found your way here, chances are you love chickens too. We'd love to share a little of what we've built with you.

Our Breeds

Every bird is here
for a reason.

We've built our flock around breeds with character — beautiful eggs, rich history, and personalities worth getting to know. Here's a closer look at the three breeds at the heart of our program.

Ermine
Ameraucana

Egg Color Blue
Production Moderate to good
Temperament Friendly, curious
View Pricing

The Ermine Ameraucana is a striking variety of a breed we fell head over heels for — and one of the primary reasons Magnolia Hill Farm exists. With their clean white and black plumage, muffs, beards, and vivid blue eggs, Ermines are genuinely hard to resist.

Ameraucanas trace their roots to the Araucana, a Chilean breed known for its blue egg gene, but were developed in the United States as a more stable, tail-bearing breed with a defined standard. The Ermine variety is still relatively rare, which makes quality breeding stock all the more important.

Our Ermine flock is managed with intention — we select for true-to-standard type, strong blue egg color, and calm, handleable temperament. These are birds worth investing in, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Black Copper
Marans

Egg Color Deep chocolate
Production Moderate
Temperament Calm, docile
View Pricing

If you've ever cracked open an egg so dark it looks almost like polished mahogany, there's a good chance it came from a Black Copper Marans. These French birds are legendary among egg enthusiasts, and for good reason — their deep chocolate eggs are among the most sought-after in the poultry world.

Originating in the Marans region of western France, BCMs were developed as a dual-purpose farm breed prized for both their dark eggs and their table qualities. In France, egg color is taken so seriously that Marans eggs are graded on a color scale — and we hold our birds to that same standard.

At Magnolia Hill Farm, our Black Copper Marans are selected for deep, consistent egg color, classic feathered-leg type, and the gentle, easy-going disposition the breed is known for. They're a cornerstone of our breeding program and a favorite of everyone who visits the farm.

Lavender Marans
× Lavender Orpington

Egg Color Medium–dark brown
Production Good
Temperament Exceptionally gentle
View Pricing

Our Lavender Marans × Lavender Orpington cross brings together two of the most beautiful and beloved breeds in the chicken world. Using a Lavender Marans rooster over Lavender Orpington hens, we're producing birds that combine the soft, slate-lavender plumage of both parent breeds with the generous size and famously calm temperament of the Orpington — along with egg color that runs noticeably darker than a standard Orpington.

These are true dual-purpose birds — substantial, beautiful, and a joy to keep. Whether you're looking to add some visual flair to your backyard flock or want a steady layer with a gentle personality, this cross delivers on all fronts. As we refine and develop this line, we're excited about where it's headed.

The Rest of the Flock

Beyond our three primary breeds, Magnolia Hill Farm is home to almost 30 breeds in all — a living testament to our ongoing love of all things chicken. Our broader flock includes a rotating cast of heritage and specialty breeds chosen for egg color, personality, and the simple joy of variety.

If you've ever wanted to fill a basket with eggs in every shade of the rainbow, you'll understand exactly why we can't stop adding breeds.

Stay tuned — we'll be adding breed profiles and photos as our flock continues to grow.
